DOCX to KDP guide
How to format a DOCX manuscript for KDP paperback
Word is excellent for drafting and editing, but a DOCX manuscript often contains hidden layout decisions that do not translate cleanly to a printed paperback. The safest workflow separates manuscript preparation from final book pagination.
Prepare a clean DOCX with consistent chapter headings and real paragraph breaks, choose the final trim and paper specifications, generate a fixed-size PDF with embedded fonts, then inspect every page in KDP Print Previewer.
1. Clean the manuscript
Accept or reject tracked changes, delete comments, and remove duplicate spaces. Keep body paragraphs consistent. A formatter can interpret clear structure more reliably than a document assembled with tabs, repeated returns, and manual spaces.
- Use one blank paragraph or a consistent marker for scene changes
- Place each chapter heading in its own paragraph
- Avoid text boxes for ordinary body text
- Check smart quotes, em dashes, and apostrophes
- Save a fresh DOCX copy before importing
2. Choose the print specifications
Trim size determines the physical page and changes line length, pagination, and printing cost. Six by nine inches is common for U.S. paperbacks, while 5 × 8 and 5.5 × 8.5 create a smaller reading experience. Paper choice also affects the maximum KDP page count.
- Confirm the exact trim selected in the KDP setup
- Choose cream or white paper before final pagination
- Use no bleed for ordinary text-only interiors
- Select a readable body size, commonly around 10–12 points
3. Generate and inspect the PDF
A print PDF should have one book page per PDF page—not two pages placed together as a spread. Check title and copyright pages, chapter openings, scene breaks, page numbers, blank pages, and the final lines of every chapter. Fonts should be embedded in the exported file.
- Review the exact PDF preview
- Read the preflight report
- Open the downloaded PDF independently
- Upload it to KDP Print Previewer
- Order a physical proof before publication
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Will DOCX page breaks be preserved?
Typeset Ready repaginates the manuscript for the selected trim size. Chapter behavior is controlled by the chosen chapter-start option rather than arbitrary Word page breaks.
Are images and tables imported?
No. The current formatter is for text interiors and does not preserve images, tables, footnotes, columns, or complex Word layouts.
Why does the PDF page count differ from Word?
The printed trim size, embedded typeface, font size, margins, and chapter treatment are different from the Word editing document, so pagination changes.
