Print-ready interior guide

How to create a print-ready book interior PDF

“Print-ready” means more than opening successfully as a PDF. The file must describe the final physical pages consistently enough for a printer to trim, bind, and reproduce the book without hiding text or changing its appearance.

Short answer

A print-ready interior uses the final trim dimensions, safe margins, an adequate binding gutter, embedded fonts, one book page per PDF page, and consistent pagination. It should be reviewed at full size and inside the printer’s preview system.

The physical page

Trim size is the finished size after manufacturing. A no-bleed text interior should match that width and height exactly. Bleed requires a larger PDF page and is necessary when artwork touches a trimmed edge; Typeset Ready currently produces no-bleed text interiors.

  • Select trim before typography
  • Do not export reader spreads
  • Keep body content inside safe margins
  • Use mirrored margins for left and right pages

Typography and structure

Body typography should remain comfortable across hundreds of pages. Chapter openers need enough distinction to establish hierarchy without creating accidental near-empty pages. Running titles and page numbers should be consistent and unobtrusive.

  • Embed every used font style
  • Check bold and italic passages
  • Inspect hyphenation and loose lines
  • Confirm scene-break markers
  • Review front matter and chapter numbering

A practical preflight

Review the PDF independently after download. Search for missing characters, unexpected blank pages, clipped lines, and chapters detected incorrectly. Compare the manuscript word total with the formatter’s report, then upload to KDP Print Previewer.

  • Correct trim and page count
  • Title and author supplied
  • Fonts embedded
  • Adequate inside gutter
  • No unplanned sparse pages
  • Every chapter included
  • Final physical proof ordered

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Should a paperback PDF contain spreads?

No. Upload one book page per PDF page. KDP’s previewer assembles those individual pages into left-right spreads.

What is a no-bleed interior?

A no-bleed interior keeps all text and graphics inside the trim edge. The PDF page matches the selected trim size.

Are crop marks needed?

No. A normal KDP interior PDF should not include printer crop marks or color bars.
